A Taste of Health local Cookery Club

Cook cheap and healthy grub at your local cookery club!

Participants in a Community Cookery Class

If you live or work in Greenwich, you can learn more about cooking healthy meals on a budget at Greenwich’s Community Cookery Clubs, held regularly at local venues within the borough.

Last year, hundreds of residents flocked through the doors of our Cookery Clubs in Greenwich borough to take part. They consist of five weekly two-and-half hour sessions, delivered to a group of about six to twelve people and are absolutely free! They are fun, educational and you don’t need any experience of cooking at all.

A Taste of Health cookery clubs provide an opportunity to cook and taste a variety of quick, healthy, cheap and delicious meals as well as meeting other local people.

David, from Eltham came along with his wife Sheila to take part in the Cookery Club at Coldharbour Leisure Centre after he discovered he had high cholesterol and wanted to learn about fats and sugars in order to lead a healthier lifestyle.

He said: “I’ve always enjoyed cooking but I didn’t look at foods for the amount of sugar, salt and fat content. You learn to balance the healthy, like fruit and veg, and the less healthy alternatives. I’m eating more healthily now, have lost weight and reduced my cholesterol to a healthy level.

We’ve always recommended the cookery clubs to people. You learn a lot and it’s interesting to taste different foods and spices you’ve never used.  There’s also a very friendly atmosphere, everyone joins in”.

Roger has also been attending one of the Community Cookery Clubs, here is his story:

“Before I came along to Cookery Club I had never cooked anything other than a fried breakfast! I have now retired and my wife is still working so I wanted to get some background in cooking so that I could prepare a meal for her when she gets home from work.

The club was very friendly! It was not quite what I expected, as I thought the cookery would be demonstrated, but I liked the fact we got down to the food preparation ourselves.

It has also made me take more notice of the food we eat. One of the biggest things for me was seeing the fat, salt and sugar test tubes, which really made me think – am I eating that much fat, salt and sugar?!

To anyone else thinking about coming along to Cookery Club I’d say get out there and go! What have you got to lose – apart from some weight!?”
